HIKING EAGLE WIND TRAIL - Rabbit Mountain, near Lyons, Colorado
Because I’ve been busy working on a writing residency, I’ve kept my recent hikes simple and close to home. If you like to see wildlife, Rabbit Mountain near Lyons, Colorado is a fun choice. The chatty prairie dog town at the trailhead might tempt you to hang out there all day and skip the hike… but keep walking. On a clear day, the 4-mile lollipop loop known as Eagle Wind Trail offers panoramic views of the Continental Divide and the prairie. I recommend you go early, because there’s a good chance of seeing white tail deer. Here’s a video of my recent hike:

I love prairie dog towns! I was working at one site once up in I forget which town north of Denver, but right outside the window there was one. Kept distracting me from working.
I’ll have to check out Eagle Mountain when I get back.

I think prairie dogs are fun because they’re so social. Did you know they exhibit a form of altruism? If a hawk swoops by, one will stay above ground to “peep” the alarm for the others, at the risk of being gobbled up. Pikas are also cute, but harder to catch on camera. I hope to tape some when I hit a 13-er later this month.
Oh, and just to help you hit the right trail, Shawn, the spot you’ll be looking for is Rabbit Mountain, and the trail is “Eagle Wind.”

Prairie dogs are so cute. It must have been a real joy to watch them in their natural habitat.
I can’t get over how they eat. Just like humans, with their little paws! They remind me of grey squirrels. What a lovely video Cara. Thanks for sharing.

Wildlife is always the best part of a hike for me, Zee. Thanks for letting me share that lazy little walk with you. I’m heading deeper into the high country this month, which should be more awe-inspiring, though perhaps not quite as adorable.
